"VISHU" is the New Year of all Keralites and it falls on April month, it is also referred as the Malayalam New Year. Vishu is celebrated in Malayalam month of Medam and is an important festival in Kerala State. Historically the festival is deeply rooted in agriculture. The Vishu day celebrations begin with the "Vishukani". Vishukani is the first thing that people see on the day, the Vishukani is usually prepared in the night itself before the Vishu day. Immediately on awakening from sleep, people close their eyes and proceed towards the place where Vishukani is placed.
Vishukani consists of Rice, Kasavu Mundu (traditional cloth of Kerala), Gold, Silver, Mirror (usually Aranmula Kannadi), Mango, Jackfruit, Coconut, Banana, Cucumber, Unniyappam (Kaarayappam) and Kanikonna Flower (Yellow Flower known as Indian Laburnum). These all placed in front of an Idol or portrait of Lord Krishna, a traditional Kerala lamp is also lit near it placed. The eldest member in the family gives "Vishukaineetam" to the other family members, the Vishukaineetam usually given is coins. People then ahead to nearby Sree Krishna Temples.
